To kick off their new relationship, a Pontiac "Department X" all-aluminum 389 engine went into experimental production! This super rare engine was cast from the same 389 forms used in 1959 and experimental aluminum heads were cast with designs seen on both 1959 & 1960 cast iron versions, and a cast aluminum intake made to receive a 4-barrel carburetor. Only 14 engines we estimated to have been produced, with just 3 known to exist today! This is the only running example anywhere in the world! Pontiac enthusiast and restoration specialist, Tom Schlauch, located in California, found & expertly completed the actual build of this engine. Touring cars and roadsters also wore wood-spoke wheels. The new Chevy still rode on a 103-inch wheelbase but was now powered by an improved power plant. The Chevrolet 171-cubic inch four-cylinder engine featured overhead valves and produced 26 horsepower, while the Model T's L-head four was rated at 20 horsepower. Chevy had a conventional three-speed manual transmission but updated with a new single dry plate clutch replacing the old cone clutch style. On the other hand, Ford clung to the two-speed planetary gearbox used in Model Ts since 1908. This example of Chevrolet's Series K Superior Touring was purchased by the former owner's husband in 1972 and has been in single-family ownership ever since. It was restored sometime in the mid-1970s. In 1976 it reportedly won a national award. For the next few decades this wonderful car and its owner were a mainstay in the Antique Car Club of Maryland, and it was used frequently for local parades, weddings and other events. Before it did, however, some of the most exciting cars of the period appeared, exemplified by the famed "Darrin Packard's," with bodies by famed designer Howard A. "Dutch" Darrin. Today, Darrin's creations are best known for their lovely lines and the distinctive "Darrin Dip" in the doors. His initial designs on the Packard 120 chassis were an unqualified triumph of modern design, and quickly, his order backlog began to grow. This 1939 Packard 120 Darrin Convertible Victoria is in excellent condition, having undergone a restoration spanning the latter part of 2006 and early 2007. The restoration was primarily cosmetic in scope, with the Packard requiring only minor mechanical attention. Stripped to bare metal, the bodywork was thoroughly prepared, repainted, color-sanded and buffed. During the process, a section of original paint was discovered, so it was decided to repaint the Packard in its original yellow. A new tan convertible top and boot were fitted, and the burled wood dash was refinished. The burgundy leather interior continues to show quite nicely. Other features include a Lalique mascot and the original Packard radio (upgraded with solid-state internals). Although the early history of the car is unknown, a former owner was able to trace it back to 1981, when "Tiny" Gould brokered its sale from Mr. J.J. Thompson in Fort Lauderdale, Florida to the Imperial Palace Collection in Las Vegas. The Packard would change ownership two more times before it was treated to a partial restoration in 1999 and then acquired by the next owner. In early 2007, the car joined a highly regarded private collection, where it has remained ever since. It is believed that only about eight Model 1701 Packard Eights were given the Darrin Convertible Victoria treatment. Furthermore, it appears only 30 Packard Darrins were produced in Hollywood between 1937 and 1941 (later cars were produced by Packard in Connersville, Indiana). These numbers include five built in 1940 and one built for Errol Flynn in 1941. Darrin's cars are extremely popular today.
